West Falkland is the second largest island of the Falklands, lying west of East Falkland across Falkland Sound. Its coastline is extraordinarily ragged, with long inlets, harbours and peninsulas cutting into it from every side, and dozens of smaller islands scattered offshore. Inland, the land is mostly open grass and moorland, rising to ridges in the north where Mount Adam, the archipelago's highest peak, stands.
Settlement is sparse and dispersed. Sheep farming has long defined the island, and its communities are farm settlements such as Port Howard, on the Falkland Sound shore, and Fox Bay on the southeast coast. Tracks and gravel roads join them across the open camp, as the countryside is known locally, while many outlying farms are reached by air or by sea.
