Wels lies on the Traun in Upper Austria, on a broad, flat plain between Linz and the Alpine foothills. The river runs along the southern side of the centre, and from above its channel, weirs and wooded banks form a strong line that the city grew beside. North of it, streets spread outward in every direction across open, level ground.
The city has deep roots: as Ovilava it was an important Roman town, and in 1519 Emperor Maximilian I died in the castle here. The historic core still centres on the Stadtplatz, a long square lined with townhouses, and the old town's footprint is easy to pick out on the map as a tight cluster of narrow lanes.
