Wilmington Island lies east of Savannah in Chatham County, one of the chain of islands between the city and the Atlantic. On a map its outline is irregular and deeply indented, shaped by the Wilmington River and a network of tidal creeks that cut into the land. The streets follow the high ground, curving along the shore and ending in quiet cul-de-sacs that reach towards the marsh.
The island is largely residential, with homes set among live oaks, a golf course and small marinas along the waterfront. The main road towards Tybee Island passes nearby, linking the island to Savannah in one direction and the beaches in the other.
