Wisch was a municipality in the Achterhoek, in the east of Gelderland, before it merged into Oude IJsselstreek in 2005. It took its name from Huis Wisch, the old castle estate near Terborg. On a map the area is not one town but a group of villages, including Terborg, Silvolde and Varsseveld, spread across a green, finely divided landscape close to the German border.
The Oude IJssel river flows through the western part of the area, and its gentle curves set the direction for roads and settlement around Terborg and Silvolde. Around the villages lies typical Achterhoek country: small fields, hedgerows, tree-lined lanes and scattered farms, which appear from above as a delicate mesh of lines. Wooded estates break up the pattern with larger, calmer shapes.
