Wittenheim lies in Haut-Rhin, just north of Mulhouse, on the flat ground of the upper Rhine plain. On a map it is a mix of patterns: an older village core with irregular streets, and around it the regular, carefully planned housing estates of the twentieth century. Fields and woodland lie beyond, and the roads toward Mulhouse link the town to the wider urban area.
Wittenheim grew with the Alsace potash basin. Mining companies built cités minières here, estates of worker housing with gardens, laid out along tree-lined streets in geometric blocks. The mines have long since closed, but those neighbourhoods still define much of the town's shape and give it an identity distinct from its larger neighbour.
