Wuwei sits in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu, the long, narrow passage between the Qilian Mountains and the deserts of the north that once carried Silk Road traffic west from central China. On a map the city is a compact oasis: a dense core of streets surrounded by a wide patchwork of irrigated farmland, fed by rivers that come down from the mountain snow to the south.
Historically the city was known as Liangzhou, an important frontier and trading post on the route to Central Asia. Its modern layout is organised around broad, straight avenues, with newer districts spreading outward in regular blocks. Beyond the fields, the land turns dry very quickly, and the edge of the Tengger Desert lies not far to the northeast.
A Wuwei map poster captures that sharp contrast between cultivated ground and open land. The city is also known far beyond Gansu for the bronze Galloping Horse, a Han dynasty sculpture found in a tomb here in 1969, which later became the emblem of Chinese tourism.
