Lanzhou is one of the most linear large cities in China. The Yellow River runs through it from west to east, and the city follows the valley floor on both banks, rarely more than a few kilometres wide. On a map the built-up area becomes a long ribbon of streets, squeezed between the river and the steep loess hills that rise on either side.
The river is crossed again and again along its length. The oldest of these crossings, the Zhongshan Bridge, was the first iron bridge over the Yellow River when it opened in 1909. Just north of it, Baita Mountain climbs above the water with its white pagoda, and to the south Wuquan Mountain closes off the old centre.
A Lanzhou map poster shows how firmly geography shaped the city. The capital of Gansu grew as a crossing point on the Silk Road, where routes toward the Hexi Corridor met the river, and the valley still dictates everything: the main avenues run parallel to the water, and side streets climb until the hills stop them.

Zhongshan Bridge
Opened in 1909 as the first iron bridge on the Yellow River, it sits at the historic heart of the city, directly below Baita Mountain on the north bank.
Valley walls
Steep, eroded loess hills frame the city on both sides, so the street network ends in sharp edges and short switchbacks rather than fading slowly into suburbs.
