Wei River spine
The river runs through the length of the valley, and the town's main streets follow it, so the whole plan is organised along one flowing line.

Gangu Chengguanzhen Map Poster & Print
Gangu Chengguanzhen is the seat of Gangu County in eastern Gansu. Like many towns in this part of China, it takes its shape from the land. The built area stretches along the valley of the Wei River, and the loess hills on either side keep the town long and narrow, with main streets running parallel to the water.
The valley has been a corridor for travel between the Chinese heartland and the northwest for a very long time. Today a road and a railway follow the river, and on the map they run alongside the older streets. The Daxiangshan cliff carvings, a well-known Buddhist site, lie in the hills near the town.
A Gangu Chengguanzhen map poster shows a town that could only have been drawn by its terrain. The river gives it a spine, the valley walls give it edges, and the tracks and roads along the bottom add a set of long, steady lines. The result is an elongated, calm composition that reads well in portrait format.

Hemmed by loess hills
Steep hills rise on both sides of the valley floor, keeping the built area narrow and leaving the upper parts of the map largely open.
Valley transport corridor
A railway and a road share the flat ground by the river, drawing long parallel lines that echo the direction of the water.
