Yako is the capital of Passoré Province in the Nord region of Burkina Faso, on the main road that runs north from Ouagadougou toward Ouahigouya. On a map the highway passes straight through town, and a loose grid of streets spreads out on either side across flat, open ground.
The centre gathers around the main road with markets and administrative buildings, while residential quarters extend outward in broad blocks, often defined by compounds of houses and courtyards. At the edges, the street pattern thins into tracks leading into the surrounding savanna, fields and small seasonal watercourses.
Yako is known as the birthplace of Thomas Sankara, the former president of Burkina Faso, which gives the town a particular place in the country's history.
