Yangshuo, in Guangxi, is known for its karst landscape: hundreds of steep limestone peaks rising abruptly from flat fields. On a map of streets and water, the peaks appear as gaps, places where roads cannot go, so the town's layout is squeezed into the flat ground between them. The Li River runs along the edge of town, and its bends shape the waterfront and the direction of the older streets.
The town is compact, centred on West Street, a pedestrian lane that has welcomed travellers for decades. Beyond the centre, roads fan out into the countryside, following the Yulong River and the valley floors past villages and rice paddies. The Li River scenery between Guilin and Yangshuo is so well known that it appears on the back of the twenty-yuan banknote.
