Yaoundé is often called the city of seven hills, and the map shows why. Roads climb, curve and double back as they follow ridges and valleys, and neighbourhoods fill the lower slopes between green, steeper ground. There is very little in the way of a grid. Instead, the street network looks organic, branching like the drainage lines of the landscape beneath it.
The administrative centre sits on relatively level ground among the hills, with ministries, the central market and main avenues gathered close together. A small municipal lake lies near the heart of the city, and Mount Fébé to the north carries forest and a hilltop road. The outer districts spread along the main routes toward Douala and the south.
