Yara is in Granma province in eastern Cuba, on the broad plain that runs from the Sierra Maestra foothills toward the Gulf of Guacanayabo. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by flat agricultural land. Roads and rail lines run out toward Manzanillo and Bayamo, and irrigation channels and fields fill the countryside around it.
The name Yara has a special place in Cuban history. The Grito de Yara, the 1868 call to arms that opened Cuba's first war of independence, is linked to this area. Local tradition also connects Yara with the story of the Taíno chief Hatuey. The town itself is modest, but its name comes up in songs, speeches and history books across the island.
