Yilan is the seat of Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan. It stands on the Lanyang Plain, a triangular lowland that opens to the Pacific and is enclosed by mountains on its other sides. From above, the city is a compact core set among rice fields and waterways, with rivers crossing the plain toward the sea. Mountains rise to the west, and the coast is a short distance to the east.
The older part of Yilan was once enclosed by city walls, and the roads that replaced them still trace the outline of the historic town. Since the Hsuehshan Tunnel opened in 2006, the city has become much easier to reach from Taipei. Offshore, the volcanic Guishan Island, or Turtle Island, is a familiar landmark seen from much of the plain.
