Yuli, also known as Lopnur County, is in the Bayingolin prefecture of Xinjiang, on the northeastern side of the Tarim Basin. The town is a compact grid of wide streets and irrigated blocks. Outside it, the map quickly turns to farmland, scattered river channels and then open desert as the land runs south toward the Taklamakan.
The county takes in a huge area that reaches toward the dry basin of Lop Nur. It includes the ruins of Loulan, the ancient oasis kingdom on the Silk Road. Closer to the town, the Tarim River and its channels support forests of desert poplar, a tree well adapted to salt and drought. These forests are a landmark of the region.

The rivers of the northern Tarim Basin cross the county in winding, branching channels. On the map they are thin, irregular lines crossing otherwise empty ground.
Desert margin
South of the farmland, streets and fields fade into open desert. This gives the poster a strong, quiet empty space around the town.
