Zacoalco de Torres lies south of Guadalajara in Jalisco, at the margin of a broad basin once occupied by the Laguna de Zacoalco. Much of that lake has become a seasonal, largely dry flat, and on the map the difference between the compact town and the pale open expanse beside it is the first thing you notice.
The centre follows the pattern common to many Mexican towns: a grid of blocks around a main square and church, with streets extending outward until they meet farmland.
