Zalinjay, also written Zalingei, is the capital of Central Darfur in western Sudan. It stands beside Wadi Azum, a seasonal watercourse that flows only during the rains, and the volcanic highlands of Jebel Marra rise to the east. On a map the town appears as a loose grid of low-density blocks, with the wadi's sandy bed tracing a pale band along its edge.
The town is home to the University of Zalingei and serves as an administrative and market centre for the surrounding farming and herding communities. In recent decades the region has been deeply affected by conflict and displacement. Settlements around the town have grown and changed as a result, and this shows in the way the built area spreads outward.
