Zamora lies in the north-west of Spain in Castile and León, on the north bank of the Duero River. From above, the old town sits on a long, narrow rocky ridge above the water. Its lanes run lengthwise from the cathedral and castle at the western tip to the more modern districts in the east. The river curves below, with islands, weirs and mills along its course.
The city is known for having one of Europe's largest collections of Romanesque churches within a single historic centre, many of them built in the twelfth century. The cathedral, with its distinctive scaled dome, stands at the western end of the old town. Zamora's Holy Week processions are among the most famous in Spain. Parts of the medieval walls still enclose the historic core.
