Seen from above, Zhytomyr is shaped by the Teteriv River. The river loops along the city's southern and eastern edges, cutting through granite outcrops that break its banks into cliffs and small islands. The old centre sits on the high ground above the water. From there the street grid opens west and north over flatter land, and long radial roads lead out towards Kyiv, Berdychiv and Novohrad-Volynskyi.
Zhytomyr is one of the older cities in Ukraine, and local tradition dates its founding to the late ninth century. It is also the birthplace of Serhiy Korolov, the engineer behind the early Soviet space programme, and a museum of cosmonautics now stands in his home district. On a map these layers show up as a tight historic core, wide Soviet-era avenues and quieter residential blocks between them.

The small Kamianka river runs through the city from the north and meets the Teteriv near the old centre, splitting the street pattern into distinct neighbourhoods.
