Zinguédéssé lies in Burkina Faso's Centre region, close to the capital, Ouagadougou. From above it shows how settlements grow at the edge of a capital city. Rectangular plots are laid out on flat ground, straight tracks divide them into blocks, and the built-up area thins out toward the open land around it.
The terrain here is level, typical of the central Mossi plateau, with few hills and no major river to limit growth. Because of this, the street network is shaped more by land division than by geography. In some places neat grids have been marked out, while in others older paths still run across at an angle, showing routes used before the newer plots were planned.
