Aboisso lies in the southeast of Ivory Coast, not far from the border with Ghana and within reach of the Atlantic lagoons. It is the main town of the Sud-Comoé region, and on a map it appears as a modest urban core wrapped in green, with roads leading out toward the coast, the border and the plantations inland.
The Bia River is the defining feature. It flows through the town, and its curves decide where streets can run and where they stop, so neighbourhoods on either bank connect by a small number of crossings. Upstream, the river is dammed at Ayamé, one of the country's earliest hydroelectric schemes.
The surrounding area was home to the historic Sanwi kingdom of the Agni people, whose royal seat at Krindjabo lies nearby. An Aboisso map poster captures the town at a human scale: irregular blocks, a riverbank, and the main road that carries traffic between Abidjan and the Ghanaian frontier.
Curving through the town, the Bia is the strongest line on the print, splitting the built-up area and shaping how its districts meet at the water.
The highway linking Abidjan with the Ghana border passes through Aboisso, a long clear axis that the rest of the street network hangs from.
Beyond the last streets the map opens into plantations and forest, so the town sits in a wide field of white space that gives the composition room to breathe.
