Al Wajh lies on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia's Tabuk Region, between the coastal mountains and a sea fringed with coral reefs and small islands. The town grew around a natural harbour that served as a port for a long time. On the map it appears as a dense core near the water, with newer districts spreading inland in a looser grid.
Al Wajh was once a stopping point for trade and pilgrim traffic along the Red Sea, and traditional buildings in the old quarter reflect that coastal past.
