Atyrau stands on the lower Ural River, a short way upstream from where it enters the Caspian Sea, on flat, low-lying steppe below sea level. The river runs roughly north to south through the city. Because it is conventionally treated as a boundary between Europe and Asia, Atyrau is often described as a city on two continents, with several bridges joining them.
The city was founded in the seventeenth century as a fishing settlement and trading post and was long known as Guryev. It is now the centre of Kazakhstan's oil industry, close to the Tengiz field and the offshore Kashagan project. The older quarters lie near the river, and newer districts of broad avenues and large apartment blocks have spread across both banks.
An Atyrau map poster is simple and strong in composition: a single river cutting the frame, streets arranged on each side, and open, almost featureless steppe and marshland all around. On such flat ground the street grid stays clear and readable, and the river's gentle curves give it movement. Few city prints have a continental boundary running through the middle.
The river runs straight through the centre and is often treated as the border between Europe and Asia, so the poster spans two continents.
Several bridges cross the Ural, including a pedestrian crossing in the centre. They appear as short, precise strokes linking the two halves of the city.
Beyond the built-up area the land is almost level, marked by marshes, channels and scattered roads, a quiet margin that frames the dense centre.
