Awaji Island runs from northeast to southwest across the eastern Seto Inland Sea, bridging the gap between Kobe on Honshu and Naruto on Shikoku. On the map it is a long wedge with a hilly spine. Towns and farmland sit on the coastal plains, and the widest ground is in the south. An expressway runs the length of the island and connects its two bridges.
Those bridges define the island on paper. In the north, the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge crosses the Akashi Strait. For many years it had the longest central span of any suspension bridge. In the south, the Ōnaruto Bridge crosses the Naruto Strait, known for the tidal whirlpools that form beneath it. An Awaji Island map poster shows both crossings as thin threads over water.
In the Kojiki, Japan's oldest chronicle, Awaji is the first island created by the gods Izanagi and Izanami. The island also lies on the Nojima Fault, which ruptured in the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake, and a preserved section of the fault can be seen in a memorial museum. On the east coast, the old castle town of Sumoto sits below a hilltop castle site.

At the southern tip, the narrow Naruto Strait between Awaji and Shikoku produces strong tidal whirlpools. Visitors watch them from boats and from a walkway on the Ōnaruto Bridge.
A chain of low mountains runs down the island, pushing roads and settlements toward the coast. The contours give the interior texture between the two coastal rings of towns.

Aiheā Awaji Island
Awaji is a map for people who have driven across it between Kansai and Shikoku, who grew up in its farming and fishing towns, or who like the way two bridges pin an island in place. The composition balances naturally, with a famous crossing at each end.
