Wakayama grew around a castle, and the castle still anchors the map. Its wooded hill rises in the middle of the city, surrounded by moats and parkland, and the streets of the old castle town spread from it in a loose grid. The Kinokawa River passes north of the centre and widens as it enters the Kii Channel, giving the city a strong line of water.
Work on the castle began in 1585 on the orders of Toyotomi Hidenaga. In the Edo period it became the seat of the Kii branch of the Tokugawa family, one of the three senior houses that could supply a shogun. The keep burned in 1945 and was rebuilt in concrete in 1958. Its hilltop is still the clearest landmark on any plan of the city.
South of the centre, the coast bends into Wakaura, a shallow bay of tidal flats and small islands. Poets have praised it since the eighth century, and the hills around Kimiidera temple rise behind it. A Wakayama map poster holds river, castle and bay in one composition, with the formal grid of the castle town set between two very different kinds of water.
The castle hill is a green island in the heart of the city, outlined by moats and stone walls. The streets around it still follow the pattern of the old castle town.
The river broadens as it meets the sea. Its wide channel is crossed by a series of bridges linking the castle district with the neighbourhoods and hills to the north.
To the south, the coastline breaks into small inlets, tidal flats and islets joined by bridges. This delicate pattern of land and water has drawn visitors for centuries.
