Bāmyān lies in the central highlands of Afghanistan at about 2,500 metres, in a broad valley of the Hindu Kush. From above, the valley floor is a narrow green strip of fields, trees and irrigation channels following the Bamyan River. The town's streets and bazaar sit along it, and bare, deeply folded mountains rise sharply on both sides, with almost no roads crossing them.
Along the northern side of the valley runs a long cliff face that once held two giant standing Buddhas, carved in the sixth and seventh centuries. They were destroyed in 2001, but their empty niches and the many caves around them remain. The cultural landscape of the valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also includes the ruined citadels of Shahr-e Gholghola and Shahr-e Zuhak.
A Bāmyān map poster traces the valley's long, narrow form, with its river, fields and town strung between the mountains. The emptiness of the surrounding ranges makes the valley floor stand out, a line of life running through one of Central Asia's most historic landscapes.
The long sandstone cliff on the valley's north side holds the niches of the destroyed Buddhas and hundreds of caves. It is the valley's most famous landmark.
The Bamyan River runs along the valley floor, flanked by irrigated fields and poplars. It forms a narrow band of fine texture across the map.
Bare ridges of the Hindu Kush enclose the valley on every side. They leave wide, open areas on the poster that emphasise the settled valley below.
