Bazhong lies in the northeast of Sichuan province, in hill country that rises toward the Micang Mountains along the border with Shaanxi. The prefecture-level city covers a large rural area, and its population figure counts all of it. The urban centre itself is compact, shaped by the valley it occupies rather than by any master grid.
On a map the Ba River is the organising line. It loops through the city in a series of meanders, and the built-up area fills the flatter ground inside and alongside those loops. Bridges stitch the banks together at short intervals, and roads climb away from the water in winding lines, following the contours of the surrounding slopes.
The city is known for the Nankan Grottoes, a group of Buddhist cliff carvings dating largely from the Tang dynasty, on a hillside just south of the centre. A Bazhong map poster shows the kind of landscape typical of inland Sichuan: water and relief deciding where a city can go, and the streets making the most of the ground that is left.
The river curls back and forth through the urban area, and its bends define the shape of each district. In black and white, the looping water line is the dominant feature.
Streets away from the river rarely run straight. They follow slopes and ridges, and on the poster they appear as thin, curving lines between the denser blocks near the water.
Because the city sits on both sides of a winding river, bridges appear at regular intervals, each a short crossing that ties the separate pieces of town together.

Aiheā Bazhong
For people who grew up in Bazhong and have since moved to Chengdu, Chongqing or further afield, a map of the river bends is a quiet reminder of home. It is a less expected choice than a big-city poster, which is part of its appeal.
The title, subtitle and coordinates can all be changed, so you can add a family name, a home district or a year that matters. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to suit the room, and check the free preview first.
