Lake-dotted plateau
Across the flat northern lowland, hundreds of shallow lakes and ponds break the surface into a fine pattern of pale shapes. It is the most intricate part of the whole island.

Bear Island sits by itself in the open Barents Sea, roughly halfway between Spitsbergen and the northern tip of mainland Norway. It is the southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago. From above it looks like a blunt triangle, with a coast that is broken into cliffs, sea stacks and narrow coves, and with no neighbouring land to frame it on any side.
The northern and western part of the island is a low plateau covered with hundreds of small lakes. On a map they look like scattered drops of ink. The land rises towards the south and east into higher, steeper ground that ends in sheer bird cliffs. There are almost no roads or buildings, so a Bear Island map poster is mostly coastline, contour and water.
The Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz named the island in 1596, after his crew met a polar bear there. Today it is a protected nature reserve. A small meteorological station on the north coast is its only permanent human presence, and the island is an important source of weather data for this part of the Arctic Ocean.
Across the flat northern lowland, hundreds of shallow lakes and ponds break the surface into a fine pattern of pale shapes. It is the most intricate part of the whole island.
The south coast rises into steep walls and detached sea stacks. On the map they give the triangle a hard, jagged edge, set against the smoother outline of the north.
There is no other land in view, so the island floats in the middle of the frame. Its isolation becomes part of the composition.

Aiheā Bear Island
This poster suits people who are drawn to the far north: polar researchers, sailors, birdwatchers and anyone who has followed the Barents Sea routes. It is a quiet, almost abstract print of rock and water. Very few people will ever see the island in person.
You can add your own title, a subtitle such as an expedition year, and the coordinates line. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint and Noir are especially good at bringing out the cold, open sea around the island.
