Straddling the 180th meridian
The line of 180 degrees longitude crosses the island, so its western and eastern halves sit in opposite hemispheres. On the poster the outline simply continues across a line that most maps split in two.

Wrangel Island lies far above the Arctic Circle, between the East Siberian and Chukchi seas, and the 180th meridian runs straight across it. From above it reads as a wide, blunt oval roughly 150 kilometres from end to end, with no towns and almost no roads. What a map shows instead is terrain: river valleys fanning out from the centre, low coastal plains and long lagoons sealed off from the sea by thin spits.
Rounded mountain ranges take up the middle of the island, and the northern half opens into a wide, flat tundra plain scattered with small lakes. The island and its neighbour, Herald Island, form a strictly protected nature reserve that UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site in 2004. Visits are rare and closely controlled, so for most people a map is the closest view they will ever get.
Wrangel is also known for what once lived here. Woolly mammoths survived on the island for thousands of years after they disappeared from the mainland, until roughly four thousand years ago. Today it holds some of the densest polar bear denning grounds in the Arctic, as well as large walrus haul-outs. A Wrangel Island map poster turns that remote outline into a quiet study of rivers and coastline.
The line of 180 degrees longitude crosses the island, so its western and eastern halves sit in opposite hemispheres. On the poster the outline simply continues across a line that most maps split in two.
Long, narrow gravel spits enclose shallow lagoons along much of the shoreline. Printed in fine lines, they give the island a doubled coastline, with an outer edge against the sea and an inner one against still water.
Rounded ranges rise through the middle of the island, and rivers drain outward from them toward every coast. Their branching valleys are the main detail on a map with almost no roads or settlements.

This poster is for people drawn to the far north: polar researchers, wildlife photographers, readers of Arctic history, and anyone who likes a map with almost nothing man-made on it. The outline, the rivers and the lagoons are enough to give a wall a sense of distance.
You can change the title, add a subtitle such as an expedition year, and edit the coordinates line. Choose one of five styles. Blueprint and Noir suit the Arctic setting, and Classic black & white keeps it crisp. Download the HD files for $9 or order a matte print, framed if you like.
