Blyth is a port town on the Northumberland coast, where the River Blyth meets the North Sea. On a map the river mouth divides the composition: the estuary runs inland in a broad curve, with quays and industrial land along its southern bank, while to the south of the town centre a long stretch of beach and dunes follows the coast.
The port has shaped Blyth for centuries, and it was once one of the busiest coal-exporting harbours in the region. More recently the town has become associated with renewable energy, with offshore wind development and research along the coast. On the seafront, the wartime Blyth Battery survives among the dunes.
A Blyth map poster shows the long piers guarding the harbour entrance, the terraced streets of the town centre and the open lines of the shore. The town is also known for Blyth Spartans, a non-league football club famous for a remarkable FA Cup run in the late 1970s, a story still told locally.
The River Blyth enters the North Sea between protective piers, with quays and harbour basins lining the estuary as it curves inland.
South of the town centre, a long strip of sand and dunes runs along the coast, a smooth line contrasting with the angular port.
Rows of terraced houses form tight, repeating blocks in the older parts of town, typical of the North East's industrial past.
