Cabanatuan City lies in Nueva Ecija, in the heart of the Central Luzon plain, the flat and fertile region often called the rice granary of the Philippines. From above, the city is a compact centre of streets and markets surrounded by an expanse of rice fields, with the Pampanga River curving past on its way south.
The Maharlika Highway, part of the Pan-Philippine route, passes through the city and makes it a natural stopping point between Manila and northern Luzon. Cabanatuan is widely known for its many tricycles and has often been described as the tricycle capital of the country, a detail that suits its closely spaced, busy streets.
The city also has a place in wartime history: in January 1945 a raid rescued hundreds of Allied prisoners from a camp near Cabanatuan. A Cabanatuan City map poster shows the peaceful shape of the place today, with its dense core, the highway, the river and the open fields that define its surroundings.
The main national highway runs through the city as a long, steady line, linking Cabanatuan with Manila to the south and the provinces of northern Luzon.
The river winds past the city in slow meanders, its channel and floodplain marking a soft boundary between built-up streets and open farmland.
Around the centre the street pattern thins into irrigated rice fields, so the map ends not in a hard border but in a gradual transition to the countryside.
