Carlisle stands in the far north of England, a short distance from the Scottish border, where the River Eden is joined by the Caldew and the Petteril. The old city occupies a raised site just south of the Eden, protected by water on several sides, a position that explains why it was fortified from Roman times onward.
Carlisle Castle, begun in the late eleventh century, guards the northern edge of the centre above the river, while the cathedral lies close by within the historic core. The medieval street plan converges on the market cross, and at the southern end the twin towers of the Citadel mark the former entrance to the walled city.
Hadrian's Wall once ran just north of the city, crossing the Eden near Stanwix, and Carlisle remains a starting point for walks along its route. A Carlisle map poster draws all of this together: river bends, bridges, the compact medieval core and the railway lines that made the city a major junction.
The Eden, Caldew and Petteril converge around Carlisle, their curves and floodplains wrapping the historic centre and giving the map a strong natural framework.
The medieval castle above the Eden and the nearby cathedral anchor the northern part of the old city, surrounded by its short, converging streets.
At the southern entrance to the centre, the Citadel's twin round towers mark the old city gate, where historic streets meet the approach from the railway station.

Aiheā Carlisle
Carlisle means a great deal to those who grew up in Cumbria, studied here or crossed often between England and Scotland. A map of its rivers and streets captures a city shaped by centuries of frontier history in a single calm image.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a year or a family name. Among the five styles, Paper lends a historic feel suited to the castle and cathedral, Blueprint emphasises the rivers and rail lines, and Noir gives the medieval core real depth.
