Cheboksary stands on the high right bank of the Volga, and its map is shaped by the river and by the ravines that cut down toward it. Districts sit on raised ground separated by green gullies, so the street pattern breaks into distinct sections rather than a continuous grid. The Volga, widened by a reservoir downstream, forms a broad edge along the northern side.
In the centre, Cheboksary Bay is an almost enclosed body of water ringed by embankments, and it gives the capital of Chuvashia an unusual focal point. Above the water stands the Mother Patroness monument, visible from across the bay, while the restored old town with its churches lies on the slopes nearby.
Cheboksary is the main cultural centre of the Chuvash people, whose language is the only living member of the Oghur branch of the Turkic family.
