Cumbernauld was designated a new town in 1955, planned to take overspill population from Glasgow, and the plan still reads clearly from above. The town has no traditional high street. It grew around a central hilltop instead, with housing areas on the slopes below and a road system designed to keep cars and pedestrians apart. From the air it is a town of curves and loops, not a grid.
The centre runs along the ridge. It is marked by the large multi-level town centre building, which became one of the best-known and most debated pieces of postwar British architecture. Around it, residential districts spread outward in clusters. Each has its own distributor roads, threaded with footpaths that pass under the traffic instead of crossing it.
On a Cumbernauld map poster the planning itself becomes the subject. Distributor roads swing around neighbourhoods like contour lines, cul-de-sacs branch off in short fingers, and patches of woodland and glen leave green gaps between the built areas. The motorway runs along the edge, a hard straight line against the softer, deliberate curves of the town.
The town centre sits on the ridge at the heart of the plan. It is a compact, dense block of streets and structures that the surrounding neighbourhoods face toward, and it anchors the whole composition.
Cumbernauld was laid out so that people on foot could cross much of the town without meeting traffic at road level. The finer lines of paths and underpasses run their own course beneath the road network.
Wooded glens and open land split the housing into distinct clusters. They leave blank spaces on the map that give the dense residential patterns room to breathe.

Aiheā Cumbernauld
People who grew up in a new town often know it by its paths and shortcuts more than its street names. A print of Cumbernauld captures that particular geography. It also appeals to anyone interested in architecture, since this postwar plan is one of the most studied in Britain.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be changed to name a neighbourhood, a move-in date or a family. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint suits a town that was first drawn up on a planner's desk.
