Eagle Pass lies on the Rio Grande in Maverick County, directly across the river from Piedras Negras in Coahuila. It grew from Fort Duncan, established in 1849, and is often cited as the first American settlement on the Rio Grande. On a map the river is the dominant line, curving between the two cities.
The older downtown sits close to the water near the international bridges, with a grid of streets extending away from the river. Newer residential areas and commercial strips spread north and east, and irrigated farmland and brush country surround the town on the landward side.
An Eagle Pass map poster shows a pair of cities facing each other across a river, joined by bridges and shaped by the same bend in the Rio Grande. Including a slice of Piedras Negras gives the print a strong cross-border composition, with the water running through its centre.
The river curves along the town's western edge, forming the international border and the most prominent line on the map.
Bridges link Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras, appearing as short, precise crossings that tie the two urban grids together.
The site of the old fort lies near the river, marking where the town began and anchoring the historic end of the street grid.
