Ganghwa-gun is a county of Incheon made up mainly of Ganghwa Island and a group of smaller islands where the Han River meets the Yellow Sea. Its position at the river mouth made it strategically important for centuries, and it served as the refuge capital of the Goryeo court during the Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century.
On the map, the main island is a rugged, compact shape separated from the mainland by a narrow strait crossed by bridges. Mountains fill much of the interior, farmland occupies the reclaimed lowland, and wide tidal flats extend along the coast when the tide is out.
