Gharroli, often spelled Gharoli, lies in East Delhi on the far side of the Yamuna, close to where the capital meets Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. It began as a village and has been absorbed into the city. Today it is part of a continuous urban fabric of residential colonies, markets and main roads.
From above, the area has the typical texture of an urbanised Delhi village: a tightly packed core of irregular lanes, surrounded by more regular blocks of planned and semi-planned housing. Larger roads divide the neighbourhood into sections, and open plots and institutional grounds appear as quieter patches between the dense streets.
A Gharroli map poster is about the everyday city rather than grand monuments: the lanes people walk to school, to work and to the market. In black and white, the intricate street pattern starts to look like woven fabric, fine-grained and busy, with the state border running along its eastern side.
The old settlement survives as a knot of narrow, winding lanes. On the map it reads as the densest, least regular part of the neighbourhood.
Around the core, residential colonies follow a more ordered layout of parallel streets. The contrast between the old and planned patterns gives the poster depth.
To the east, Delhi gives way to Uttar Pradesh with no natural boundary between them. The city simply continues, and the map shows how seamlessly the two sides join.
