Harlingen lies in the lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, about halfway between Brownsville and McAllen. From above, it reads as a broad, level grid of residential streets and farm roads. The one major interruption is the Arroyo Colorado, an old distributary channel of the Rio Grande. It winds through the city from west to east, and its banks are lined with parks and hike-and-bike trails.
Highways shape the town as much as the water does. Interstate 2 runs east to west and Interstate 69E runs north to south, and they cross on the city's edge. Valley International Airport fills the northeast with long runways. Beyond the built-up area, the grid turns into the rectangular fields of citrus and row crops that the Valley has long been known for.
A Harlingen map poster shows a city laid out on open, level ground. It has straight section-line roads, a meandering arroyo and a clear edge where streets turn into farmland. Harlingen is also home to the Marine Military Academy, whose grounds hold the original working model used for the Marine Corps War Memorial's Iwo Jima statue. That detail makes the town more familiar than its size suggests.
This winding former channel of the Rio Grande crosses the city in a series of loops. It is the most organic line on the map, set against an otherwise orderly grid.
I-2 and I-69E meet at Harlingen and draw strong straight strokes through the composition. They show the city's role as a crossroads of the lower Valley.
Valley International Airport's runways sit on the northeast side. Around the city, farm roads divide the land into large, even rectangles.

Aiheā Harlingen
Harlingen is where many Valley families work, study and put down roots. Winter Texans and military families also have ties here. A map of its grid and arroyo is a plain way to remember a specific stretch of South Texas.
