Hartlepool sits on the County Durham coast, where a short limestone headland curls out into the North Sea. On a map the shape is distinctive. The old town on the Headland faces the sea on three sides, and the newer town spreads south and west behind it around a set of enclosed docks. Farther south the coast straightens into the long sands of Seaton Carew.
The docks tell most of the story. The town grew in the nineteenth century on coal exports and shipbuilding, and the basins cut into the shore still shape the street pattern. Part of that water is now a marina, and the restored frigate HMS Trincomalee is berthed at the historic quay. In 1914 the Headland was shelled by German warships, one of the first attacks of the war on British soil.
A Hartlepool map poster shows these layers side by side: the tight streets of the Headland, the rectangular docks, the terraced grids of the Victorian town and the open line of the beach. Railway lines and the approach roads cut across the drawing, and to the south the land flattens toward the mouth of the Tees and its industrial shoreline.
The old town sits on a curled limestone promontory with the sea on three sides, a compact knot of streets that looks almost like an island on the map.
Rectangular basins cut into the shoreline mark the coal and shipbuilding era, and part of that water now forms the marina beside the historic quay.
South of the town the coast opens into a long, straight beach, a clean diagonal edge that balances the dense streets farther north.

People from Hartlepool, and people who served, sailed or studied there, tend to know its outline by heart. The headland and docks make a strong composition in pure black and white, one that reads as the town even before you notice the name.
You can set your own title and subtitle, and change the coordinates line to mark a street or a date. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the HD files for $9 or order a matte print, framed if you like.
