Hövelhof lies in the district of Paderborn in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, on the edge of the Senne, a sandy landscape of heath, pine woods and streams below the Teutoburg Forest. The map shows a small central village where roads converge, with residential areas spreading outward and several outlying hamlets scattered across the surrounding countryside.
The municipality is known as the place where the River Ems rises, its springs lying in the Senne before the river begins its long course north toward the sea. In the centre stands the Jagdschloss, a former hunting lodge of the prince-bishops of Paderborn, and nearby lies a large military training area that keeps much of the Senne free of development.
A Hövelhof map poster reflects this character: a clear centre, a railway crossing the landscape, and large areas where roads thin out into forest and heath. The lightness of the surrounding space gives the village a quiet presence on the sheet, and the scattered settlement pattern hints at centuries of farming on poor, sandy soils.
The Ems rises in the Senne within the municipality, and its first small streams appear on the map as thin lines winding through open land.
The historic Jagdschloss in the centre was built for the prince-bishops of Paderborn, and it sits among the streets that form the heart of the village.
Heath, pine woods and training grounds surround the built-up area, so large portions of the poster remain open, emphasising the contrast between settlement and landscape.
