Hucknall is a market town in Nottinghamshire, a few miles north of Nottingham. It grew in the nineteenth century around framework knitting and coal mining, and the map still shows it: rows of tightly packed terraced streets near the centre, surrounded by later housing estates that spread outward after the pits closed. The Leen valley and rail corridor run along the town's eastern side.
The town is best known as the resting place of Lord Byron, who is buried in the church of St Mary Magdalene on the market place. It is also the northern terminus of Nottingham's tram network, which shares a corridor with the railway into the city. To the west lies the old Hucknall airfield, long associated with Rolls-Royce engine testing.
A Hucknall map poster brings these layers together. The dense Victorian grid sits at the core, the tram and rail lines form a strong spine, and open airfield land lies at the edge. It makes a thoughtful piece for anyone from the town, or with family ties to its mining past.
Close rows of Victorian terraces fill the older part of town. In print they form a fine, regular texture that recalls Hucknall's industrial growth.
The railway and the tram line run side by side toward Nottingham. They draw a clear line along the eastern side of the town.
The former aerodrome shows as a broad, open space beyond the housing estates. Its long, flat outline stands apart from the surrounding street pattern.
