Huzhou lies on the southern shore of Lake Tai, one of the largest freshwater lakes in China, in the north of Zhejiang. The land here is almost entirely flat and laced with water: rivers, canals and fish ponds divide the plain into countless small parcels. On the map the lake fills the northern edge, while the city itself is crossed by waterways in every direction.
The old centre follows the rivers and canals that once served as its main streets, while newer districts spread across former farmland with wider roads and larger blocks. On the lakeshore, a horseshoe-shaped hotel tower rises beside the water and has become a local landmark. East of the city, Nanxun is one of the best-preserved canal towns in the region.
Huzhou has been known for centuries for its silk and for its writing brushes, the Hubi, counted among the finest in China. A Huzhou map poster shows the setting that sustained those crafts: a quiet mesh of water and fields, where the lake and the canals leave as strong a mark on the map as the streets do.
The broad lake fills the top of the frame. Its smooth southern shore contrasts with the dense network of channels in the city below.
Rivers and canals cross the city in all directions, forming a fine mesh of lines that gives the map a woven, detailed texture.
Around the edges of the city, the plain is divided into rectangular ponds and fields, a geometric pattern that fills the outer areas of the print.

Aiheā Huzhou
Huzhou suits anyone with family in northern Zhejiang or an interest in the water towns of the Yangtze delta. The canals and the lake create a delicate, detailed map that rewards close viewing and works well at larger sizes.
