Wuxi lies on the northern shore of Lake Tai, one of China's largest freshwater lakes, and the water defines its map. The lake's irregular coastline runs along the south-western edge of the city, broken by peninsulas and bays. Inland, a network of canals crosses the flat plain, and the old centre is enclosed by a ring of waterways that follows the line of the former city walls.
The Grand Canal passes through Wuxi on its route between Suzhou and Changzhou. To the west, Huishan and Xishan rise as low hills close to the centre, holding temples and gardens. Further south, Li Lake reaches inland as an arm of Lake Tai, and the Yuantouzhu peninsula, whose name means turtle head islet, extends into the water.
Wuxi grew as a centre of trade and later of silk and modern industry, and the Lingshan Grand Buddha stands near the lake shore to the south-west. A Wuxi map poster shows a city where canals, lake shore and low hills combine into a detailed, carefully balanced composition.
The lake's broken coastline, with peninsulas and inlets, forms the south-western edge of the map, a large expanse of water set against the dense city.
A loop of canals encircles the historic centre, giving the heart of Wuxi a clearly bounded shape surrounded by broader modern districts.
An arm of Lake Tai reaching toward the city, Li Lake is lined with parks and appears as a soft, irregular shape among the southern streets.
