Zhangjiagang is a county-level city within Suzhou, set on the low, water-laced plain of southern Jiangsu. Its northern edge follows the Yangtze, which is wide here and carries a steady stream of shipping toward Shanghai. On a map the riverbank is the dominant line, a long curve of docks, embankments and industrial land that frames everything to the south.
Inland the ground is almost perfectly flat, and the city has been laid out accordingly. The central district is a tidy arrangement of broad roads crossing at right angles, with large blocks of housing, parks and civic buildings in between. Threaded through this grid are the canals and drainage channels typical of the delta, which appear as thin lines running against or alongside the streets.
The port is the reason much of the city exists in its present form, and it remains an important river harbour on the lower Yangtze. A Zhangjiagang map poster shows the relationship clearly: a working waterfront along the top, a calm planned centre below, and a web of water tying the two together.
The river forms the whole northern boundary, a broad band of water edged by quays, wharves and embankments that gives the poster a strong horizontal line along the top.
The urban core is organised as a clear grid of wide roads and generous blocks, with open squares and green spaces set between them.
Canals and channels cut across the plain between the town and the surrounding villages, adding fine, slightly irregular lines that soften the geometry of the main roads.

For people who grew up in Zhangjiagang or worked along its waterfront, the map is a quiet record of a place that has changed quickly. The river edge and orderly grid make a balanced, graphic composition that suits a clean interior.
