Janakpur lies in the flat Terai of south-eastern Nepal, close to the Indian border, and on a map its most distinctive feature is water. The city is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Sita, and the Janaki Mandir, a large white temple built in the early twentieth century, stands at its heart.
