Juneau is the capital of Alaska, and its map explains why it can only be reached by sea or air. The city stretches in a thin line along Gastineau Channel, with steep mountains rising directly behind downtown and Douglas Island facing it across the water. No road connects Juneau to the rest of the North American highway network.
Downtown occupies a small, steep patch of ground beneath Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts, where short streets climb the slopes in tight switchbacks. To the northwest, roads follow the shoreline toward the Mendenhall Valley and the airport, and the Mendenhall Glacier descends toward a lake at the valley's head. The city grew from gold mining in the 1880s.
A Juneau map poster is mostly water, mountain and ice, with the city drawn as a narrow ribbon between them. The channel, the bridge to Douglas Island and the long coastal road create strong lines, while the blank uplands give the design an unusual amount of breathing room for a state capital.
The channel separates downtown Juneau from Douglas Island and runs diagonally across the map. A bridge links the two shores, one of the few crossings in the composition.
The historic centre is squeezed between the water and steep mountainsides. Its short streets and stairways form a compact, dense cluster at the foot of Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts.
Northwest of downtown, the valley holds most of Juneau's residential streets. At its head the Mendenhall Glacier reaches toward a lake, a rare glacier within reach of a city's roads.

Juneau posters often go to people who lived there for a season, worked on the water or visited on a cruise. The shape is instantly recognisable to anyone who knows it: a line of city held between mountains and sea.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the year you arrived. Pick Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Digital files cost $9 in six sizes, and printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries.
