Kawthoung stands at the very southern end of Myanmar's long Tanintharyi coast. Here the land narrows to a point where the estuary of the Kraburi River meets the Andaman Sea. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets hugging the shoreline and a few low hills. It is surrounded by water on several sides, and the coast breaks into inlets, tidal flats and small islands.
During the colonial period the town was known as Victoria Point. Across the estuary lies the Thai town of Ranong, and boats cross between the two throughout the day. Kawthoung is also the usual starting point for journeys into the Mergui Archipelago, a scattered chain of hundreds of islands that stretches north along the coast.
A Kawthoung map poster is as much about water as about streets. The river mouth, the jagged coastline and the islands offshore take up much of the frame, and the town itself appears as a small, dense area of lanes near the waterfront. It is a composition of edges: land thinning out, channels branching, and a border that runs along the middle of a river.
The Kraburi River estuary separates Kawthoung from Ranong in Thailand. It forms a wide ribbon of water that divides the map and marks an international border.
The land tapers into a final headland at the country's southern extreme. Its irregular coastline gives the poster a strong, distinctive outline.
Small islands and tidal flats dot the water offshore, a first hint of the Mergui Archipelago further north. They add fine detail to the open sea.
