Kinokawa takes its name from the river that runs through it, the Kinokawa, which flows west across northern Wakayama Prefecture toward the sea. On a map the city is shaped by that valley. A band of flat ground along the river holds the railway, the main road and most of the settlements. Hills covered in orchards and forest rise to the north, toward the Izumi range, and to the south.
The valley is one of the main fruit-growing areas of the prefecture, known for peaches, persimmons and other orchards on the slopes. Kinokawa is also the birthplace of Hanaoka Seishū, the Edo-period surgeon who performed one of the first recorded operations under general anaesthesia in 1804. Kishi Station, at the end of a small local line, became widely known for its cat stationmaster, Tama.
A Kinokawa map poster traces the long, narrow form of the valley. The river becomes a broad, gently curving line, the railway and roads run beside it, and small settlements string along the valley floor like beads. On the slopes above, fine lines of farm tracks give way to open space, producing a calm, balanced composition.
The river crosses the city from east to west. It is the central line of the whole map and the reason for the valley's shape and settlement pattern.
Fruit orchards cover the hillsides on both sides of the valley. Their small farm roads create fine, winding lines above the flatter ground along the river.
Kishi Station is known for its cat stationmaster. It is the terminus of a short local railway, whose thin line reaches into the city from Wakayama.
