Kovylkino sits in the south-west of the Mordoviya Republic, in the gently rolling country of the Volga Upland's western edge. From above it reads as a modest, clearly bounded town: a core of streets gathered near the railway, surrounded by lower-density housing that loosens into fields and patches of woodland. The Moksha river valley runs through the district, adding soft curves to an otherwise orderly pattern.
The railway is the strongest line on the map. It cuts a long, straight stroke through the town, with sidings and station tracks widening it at one point, and the street network arranges itself on either side. A Kovylkino map poster captures that relationship well: a small grid of blocks, a few longer roads leading out into the countryside, and the looser shapes of private houses and gardens at the edges.
As the administrative centre of its district, Kovylkino gathers the region's schools, offices and markets into a small area, and the map reflects this concentration. There is nothing sprawling here. The town ends where the fields begin, and that clean edge, set against the meandering lines of water and the geometry of tracks, gives the print a quiet, balanced composition.
A long, straight rail corridor crosses the town and widens around the station, giving the map a strong diagonal that the surrounding streets are organised around.
The Moksha valley brings loose, meandering lines into the district, a soft counterpoint to the straight roads and rectangular blocks of the town itself.
On the outskirts, rows of private houses with long garden plots create fine, repetitive textures that fade gradually into open farmland.
