The old medina
A tight cluster of lanes and small blocks at the heart of town. On the map it reads as the darkest, most intricate patch, clearly different from the planned streets that grew up around it.

Ksar El Kebir sits on the broad, fertile plain of the Loukkos River in northern Morocco, inland from the Atlantic port of Larache. From above, the older quarters are a dense knot of narrow, irregular lanes. Around them, newer districts follow straighter streets and wider blocks, and farmland presses in close on most sides. The river runs a slow, looping course nearby, and its bends shape how the town meets the plain.
The name means great fortress, and the town has been a market and garrison centre for centuries. It is best known internationally for the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578, often called the Battle of the Three Kings. Three monarchs died in that battle, among them the young King Sebastian of Portugal, and it changed the course of Portuguese history. The battlefield lies on the surrounding plain.
A Ksar El Kebir map poster brings together two scales in a single drawing. You can pick out the fine grain of the old centre, where lanes branch and close in on themselves. Around it runs the looser geometry of the modern town, with roads and the rail line heading north towards Tangier and south towards Rabat. In black and white, the density contrast carries the whole image.

Low, flat ground runs out in almost every direction, and the Loukkos winds across it in wide meanders. The river gives the poster a soft, organic line against the built-up area.
Road and rail links between Tangier and the south pass close to the town. Their straight lines cut through the plain and anchor the town within the wider region.
