Lenger is in Turkistan Region in southern Kazakhstan, southeast of Shymkent, at the foot of the Western Tian Shan. It grew as a coal mining town in the Soviet period. Today it is a residential and agricultural centre, and the mountains to the south, which include the Ugam range, are its most notable natural setting.
On a map, Lenger is fairly regular. Straight streets form long blocks, typical of towns planned in the Soviet era, and main roads lead north toward Shymkent.
